Emily T. Rosenman is an urban economic geographer at Penn State whose research focuses on the intersections of finance, urbanization, and inequality. Her work is driven by a desire to understand the relationships that produce wealth and impoverishment, with special emphasis on the uneven geographies of financialization and the racialization that characterizes contemporary urban life. A core question guiding her research is how intertwined social, economic, and environmental crises can be understood and addressed through the lens of finance, and who benefits from the solutions proposed. Methodologically, she employs a relational approach to examine how these crises are narrated and experienced by actors within the financial industry, governments, and communities. Her broad themes of study include the struggles of socioeconomic inequality as they relate to the financial system and the geographies of 'social' and 'green' investments. Current projects include examining for-profit investments aimed at increasing racial justice and low-carbon energy retrofitting in low-income housing markets, as well as exploring the connections between philanthropy among the ultra-rich and urban governance. Additionally, she collaborates with others to theorize and investigate the connections between monetary policy and regional inequality in Canada.
