Biography

Emily Ryo joined the faculty of Duke Law School in July 2023 as the Charles L. B. Lowndes Distinguished Professor of Law. Prior to this position, she was a professor of law and sociology at the University of Southern California Gould School of Law. Emily has also held a research fellowship at Stanford Law School and has served as a law clerk for the Honorable M. Margaret McKeown of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. She practiced at the international law firm Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton. Emily's educational background includes a JD from Harvard Law School and a PhD in Sociology from Stanford University. Her research focuses on the intersections of race, inequality, and the justice system, particularly in the context of immigration law.
