Biography

Emily S. Slocum is a Lecturer in Nurse-Midwifery at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. With 18 years of clinical practice, her journey into midwifery was influenced by her anthropological studies at the University of Michigan and service in the Peace Corps in Mali. This experience laid a strong foundation for her commitment to providing healthcare to traditionally underserved populations. Currently residing in the Bronx, Emily maintains a clinical practice while working in international settings, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo with Doctors Without Borders and at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. She actively advocates for nursing education and holds a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and a post-master’s certificate in nursing education from Vanderbilt. Notably, Emily contributed to the 7th edition of Varney’s Midwifery and was named a Fellow of the American College of Nurse Midwives in 2024. Outside of her professional life, she enjoys running, yoga, and hosting friends while sharing meals.
