Biography

Emily So is a chartered civil engineer and Director of the Cambridge University Centre for Risk in the Built Environment (CURBE). She currently serves as the Deputy Head of the School of Arts and Humanities and is an Associate Director of the Open-Oxford-Cambridge AHRC Doctoral Training Partnership. Her main research interests center on assessing and managing urban risk resilience, actively engaging with earthquake-affected communities globally to improve seismic safety. Emily's work focuses on casualty estimation and earthquake loss modeling, contributing to a better understanding of casualty relationships during seismic disasters. She is involved in interdisciplinary collaborations, working with entities such as the UK's Earthquake Engineering Field Investigation Team (EEFIT), Global Earthquake Model (GEM), World Bank, and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Recognized as an expert in her field, she provides scientific advice to the UK Government’s Cabinet Office Briefing Room (COBR) and has received the 2010 Shah Family Innovation Prize from the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI).
