Biography

Emily Troemel received her B.S. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and spent a year in Japan before obtaining her Ph.D. in Cell Biology from the University of California, San Francisco. She has worked at a start-up biotech company in the Bay Area before returning to academia as a postdoc at Massachusetts General Hospital. She joined the faculty at the University of California, San Diego in 2008. Since joining UCSD, she has received several prestigious awards including the Searle Scholars Award, the David & Lucile Packard Foundation Award, and the Burroughs Wellcome Fund Investigators in Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease Award. Her research focuses on understanding how pathogens attack their hosts and how hosts defend against these attacks, particularly using the roundworm C. elegans as a model system. Troemel's work investigates host/pathogen interactions in the intestine, exploring the immune response of epithelial cells to pathogens. Her lab studies various distinct pathogens, including microsporidia and Orsay virus, to decipher novel immune and stress responses during intracellular infections.
