Dr. Emily Wilson

Biography

Emily Wilson is a Professor of Classical Studies and Chair of the Program in Comparative Literature and Literary Theory at the University of Pennsylvania. She holds a BA in Classics from Oxford, an M.Phil. in English Literature (1500-1660) from Oxford, and a Ph.D. in Classics and Comparative Literature from Yale University. Wilson is widely recognized for her scholarly contributions, including her books 'Mocked Death: Tragic Overliving in Sophocles and Milton' (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2004) and 'Death of Socrates: Hero, Villain, Chatterbox, Saint' (Harvard University Press, 2007). She has also published translations of classic works, notably Homer’s 'Odyssey' and tragedies by Seneca and Euripides. Her research interests encompass Early Modern Literature, Drama, Theatre, History, and Literary Theory, focusing on how classical literature influences and reflects English literature. Wilson's editorial efforts include revising the Norton Anthology of World Literature. She has been featured in prominent publications including The New York Times and the Atlantic, reflecting her impact and visibility in the field.
