Emily Zazulia is an Associate Professor in the Department of Music at the University of California, Berkeley, specializing in Musicology. Her research focuses on Medieval and Renaissance music, particularly the intersection of musical style, complex notation, and intellectual history. She authored the book "Sight Meets Sound: Poetics of Late-Medieval Music Writing" published by Oxford University Press in 2021, a comprehensive study examining the notational aesthetics of polyphonic music from approximately 1340 to 1510. Zazulia's work delves into the significance of fifteenth-century composers and their musical notations, tracing their importance to 20th-century music theory and practice. Her research also includes questions of performance and transmission within late-medieval aesthetics, particularly in how music’s written form engages with concepts of sight and sound. Zazulia's past publications have covered the role of obscenity in 15th-century song, the L'homme armé tradition, and the history of music theory. She completed her PhD at the University of Pennsylvania and has received various fellowships, including the Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Completion Fellowship. In addition to her teaching at Berkeley, she serves on the advisory board for the Medieval Studies program and is affiliated with the Renaissance and Early Modern Studies program. Zazulia previously taught at the University of Pittsburgh, University of Pennsylvania, and Haverford College.
