Dr. Emma Kaufman

Biography

Emma Kaufman is the Sarah Herring Sorin Professor of Law at New York University School of Law, where she also serves as Vice Dean for Intellectual Life. Her wide-ranging scholarship in public law integrates elements of criminal, constitutional, and administrative law. Kaufman has authored significant works including the book 'Punish Expel' published by Oxford University Press, and her articles have appeared in premier law reviews. Her recent publications include notable pieces discussing various dimensions of criminal procedure and the intersection of law and immigration. Her research has garnered attention, including citations by the U.S. Supreme Court, and her expertise has been sought in expert testimony related to constitutional law and extradition. She was awarded the Podell Distinguished Teaching Award in 2022. Kaufman completed her doctorate at Oxford as a Marshall Scholar, graduated summa cum laude from Columbia, and earned her law degree from Yale. She has clerked for judges in both the Southern District of New York and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, and has previously taught at the University of Chicago Law School. Her teaching includes courses on criminal procedure and constitutional theory, focusing on the evolving challenges facing America’s legal framework.
