Emma MacPherson studied natural sciences for her undergraduate degree at Cambridge University, followed by an MSci in Physics, specializing in semiconductor physics. She started her Ph.D. in the Semiconductor Physics Group at Cambridge University and TeraView Ltd, a company specializing in terahertz imaging, in 2002. Her Ph.D. work focused on understanding the contrast mechanisms in terahertz images for skin cancer detection, and she completed her thesis in 2005. MacPherson thereafter worked at TeraView Ltd as a Medical Scientist before moving to Hong Kong in 2006. She set up a terahertz laboratory at the Department of Electronic Engineering at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and held the position of Assistant Professor from 2006 to 2009. She then spent three years at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) as a Visiting Assistant Professor before returning to CUHK in September 2012. MacPherson has significant involvement in the Infrared Millimeter Wave Terahertz Wave (IRMMW-THz) conference series, serving as General Conference Chair in 2015. She joined the Department of Physics at the University of Warwick in October 2017 and was awarded the Royal Society Wolfson Merit Award. In 2021, she was promoted to full Professor and in 2024, she received the Exceptional Service Award for her contributions to the IRMMW-THz community. Her research interests include developing THz devices and instrumentation for fast THz imaging, in vivo THz imaging, and characterization algorithm development.
