Emma Mavodza is a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Social Anthropology and Cultural Studies at the University of Zurich, and an adjunct researcher at the URPP Human Reproduction Reloaded. She earned her PhD from the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa in 2023, where her doctoral thesis explored the social dimensions of digital money in Eswatini and Zimbabwe. Her research delves into the intricate ways socio-economic factors intersect with reproduction and mobile money adoption within marginalized communities. Mavodza's current project focuses on the socio-cultural life of assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) at the margins of South Africa, examining the challenges and opportunities faced by historically marginalized populations, especially Black women. Through ethnographic research, she aims to illuminate the socio-political landscapes that shape reproductive decisions and outcomes, advocating for recognition of the historical marginalization of Black people’s reproductive capabilities. Prior to her position at ISEK, she was a junior fellow at the Walter Benjamin Kolleg at the University of Bern and has also been involved with the Joint Institute for Advanced Studies at ETH Zurich and the University of the Arts Zurich. Her work contributes to critical discourses on gender and reproductive health.
