Microbes play a pivotal role in the functioning of ecosystems, acting as emerging pathogens and ecosystem engineers that underpin ecologically and economically valuable processes such as carbon sequestration and waste processing. They form discrete ecological units with eukaryotic hosts (holobionts). Given the increasing threat of anthropogenic activity at both local and global scales, microbial communities and their functions are essential for the health of ecosystems. I am interested in understanding the intricate roles of microbial communities in aquatic ecosystems, their impact on ecosystem services, and how we can harness this knowledge to solve environmental problems.
