Emma graduated from the University of Glasgow with a BSc in Physiology in 2005 and returned to graduate with First-Class Honours in Neuroscience in 2008, earning the prestigious Ede & Ravenscroft Prize in Biology as the top performing student in the Faculty of Biomedical and Life Sciences. She then pursued a PhD in Clinical Neuroscience at the same university, investigating the efficacy of novel treatments for ischaemic stroke using clinically relevant experimental models. After completing her PhD, Emma worked on Alzheimer’s disease models at the University of Ulster before taking a 3-year postdoctoral position at Queen’s University Belfast. Her research in Belfast focused on evaluating potential cell therapy to promote vascular repair in models of oxygen-induced retinopathy and diabetic retinopathy. In 2014, Emma returned to the University of Glasgow to continue her earlier research on developing new treatments for ischaemic stroke while developing an interest in teaching. As a lecturer, she has developed courses in Human Biology & Physiology and contributes to various undergraduate and postgraduate programmes within the College of Medical, Veterinary & Life Sciences. Emma has a keen interest in brain imaging, particularly MRI techniques used in stroke research.
