Biography

Emma Teng is the T.T. Wei Fong Chao Professor of Asian Civilizations at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a MacVicar Faculty Fellow. She earned her Ph.D. from Harvard University in East Asian Languages and Civilizations, specializing in Chinese studies and Asian American studies. Professor Teng teaches classes on Chinese culture, Chinese migration history, Asian American history, East Asian culture, and women's gender studies. Her notable publications include 'Taiwan’s Imagined Geography: Chinese Colonial Travel Writing and Pictures, 1683-1895' and 'Eurasian: Mixed Identities in the United States, China, and Hong Kong, 1842-1943'. Her recent research focuses on educational migration, Chinese Exclusion, and Chinese American women’s culinary writing. Teng has received several fellowships and awards, including the Levitan Prize in Humanities and the Gordon Y. Billard Award. She has also curated the exhibit 'China Comes Tech: 1877-1931' and has served on multiple committees at MIT, including the Committee on Race and Diversity and the Faculty Advisory Board of the North American Taiwan Studies Association.
