Biography

Emmanuel Saez is the Director of the James M. Cathleen D. Stone Center on Wealth and Income Inequality at the University of California, Berkeley. He received his PhD in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1999. Saez served as an Assistant Professor of Economics at Harvard University from 1999 to 2002 before joining the faculty at UC Berkeley in 2002. He is currently the editor of the Journal of Public Economics and co-director of the Public Policy Program at the Center for Economic Policy Research (CEPR). His research primarily focuses on taxation, redistribution, and income inequality from both theoretical and empirical perspectives. Notably, he was awarded the John Bates Clark Medal by the American Economic Association in 2009 for his contributions to the field of economics. His current research interests also include the behavioral responses to taxation and optimal income taxation, as well as the dynamics of income inequality and retirement plan decisions.
