Biography

Emrys Jones is a Senior Lecturer in the English Department at King's College London, having joined in September 2016 after several years as a lecturer at the University of Greenwich. He obtained his PhD from the University of Cambridge and has authored a monograph, 'Friendship Allegiance Eighteenth-Century Literature' (Palgrave, 2013), which explored representations of friendship and politics in British literature during the 1720s and 1730s. His research spans both canonical and non-canonical authors, with a particular focus on cultures of sociability and celebrity in the eighteenth century. From 2018 to 2020, he hosted the podcast 'Pop Enlightenments' which discussed the portrayal of the eighteenth century in modern popular culture. Currently, he serves as the General Editor of the 'Journal Eighteenth-Century Studies' and has co-edited four essay collections addressing topics such as impoliteness in eighteenth-century periodical culture and early celebrity culture. He is in the process of completing a monograph titled 'Levee Hauntings', which investigates tropes of corrupt sociability in eighteenth-century literature and art. Jones welcomes inquiries from prospective PhD students interested in sociability, celebrity, party politics, and private life, particularly as they relate to the long eighteenth century.
