Biography

Enamul Huq is a professor in the Department of Molecular Biosciences at the University of Texas at Austin. He specializes in understanding how plants sense, interpret, and respond to environmental light conditions, which regulate key aspects of the plant life cycle, including seed germination and flowering time. His research primarily focuses on red/far-red light photoreceptors known as phytochromes and their interacting factors (Phytochrome Interacting Factors, PIFs). Huq's early academic career included post-doctoral research at UC Berkeley under Thomas K. Hodges, where he characterized hypoxia inducible gene expression in rice. He began his role as an Assistant Professor in Molecular Cell & Developmental Biology at the University of Texas at Austin in 2003 before advancing to Professor in Molecular Biosciences. Huq has a rich educational background with a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Biochemistry from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh, obtained in 1987 and 1988, respectively, followed by a Ph.D. in Plant Biology from Purdue University in 1997. His lab is recognized for significant contributions to the understanding of early signaling events that regulate gene expression leading to photomorphogenesis.
