Biography

Enoka Wijekoon is an Assistant Professor at the University of Guelph in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology. He obtained his Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc) from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science at the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. After completing his undergraduate studies, he joined the Department of Clinical Studies as a lecturer and clinician at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital for three years before moving to Canada for graduate studies. He earned his PhD in Biochemistry from Memorial University of Newfoundland, focusing on metabolic physiological studies related to type 2 diabetes and amino acid metabolism under the supervision of Dr. John T. Brosnan. Following his doctoral work, he was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship from the CIHR/Regional Partnership Program to study mechanisms of hypertension in the Division of Biomedical Sciences at Memorial University. Wijekoon joined the University of Guelph in 2009, where he has been involved in teaching the undergraduate biochemistry program and has acted as a faculty advisor for the biochemistry co-op program for ten years. His research interests include exploring student engagement in large classes and improving retention of information through low-stakes assessments.
