Dr. Enrique Chagoya

Biography

Enrique Chagoya is a full professor in the Department of Art and Art History at Stanford University. His teaching and artistic practice reflect a deep engagement with the ongoing cultural clashes between the United States and Latin America. Born and raised in Mexico City, he was influenced by his father's dual career as a bank employee and a night artist, which fostered his early interest in art. Chagoya studied political economy at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and began his career in political cartooning before immersing himself fully in the art world. He earned his BFA in printmaking from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1984 and subsequently pursued his MA and MFA at the University of California, Berkeley, graduating in 1987. Over the decades, Chagoya has exhibited his work nationally and internationally, with a notable retrospective at the Des Moines Art Center in 2007. His art often explores themes of colonialism and oppression and is included in significant collections, such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Whitney Museum of American Art. He has received numerous awards and fellowships, marking him as a prominent figure in contemporary art and education.
