Biography

Eran Ben-Joseph is the Faculty Director of the MIT-Israel Program and a Professor in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He led the Department of Urban Studies and Planning from 2013 to 2020. His research and teaching areas cover urban physical design, standards regulations, sustainable site planning technologies, and urban retrofitting. He is the author and co-author of several influential books such as 'Streets: Shaping Towns and Cities', 'Regulating Place: Standards Shaping Urban America', 'Code City', 'RENEW Town', and 'ReThinking Lot: New Industrial Urbanism'. Ben-Joseph has extensive experience working as a city planner, urban designer, and landscape architect across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and the United States, focusing on projects involving new towns, residential developments, streetscapes, stream restorations, and parks recreation planning. He has also led numerous national and international multi-disciplinary projects in cities like Singapore, Barcelona, Santiago, Tokyo, and Washington, DC. His current research interests include health and aging population, ecological models of development, industrial urbanism, historical neighborhood planning, and mobility infrastructure.
