Biography

Erdem Avsar is a researcher, theatre-maker, and translator with a focus on transdisciplinary cuts in cultural sociology, utopian thinking, performance studies, and queer theory. His work explores creative methodologies that reshape public discourse and offer alternative perspectives for imagining and communicating futures, particularly in illiberal and authoritarian contexts. Avsar has engaged in arts-based participatory social research projects in the UK, targeting urgent political issues such as inequalities, gender-based violence, LGBTQIA+ rights, and migration-related injustices. His PhD research in Sociology and Theatre Studies at the University of Glasgow examined the queer politics of theatre-making in Turkey, specifically through the lenses of grief and hope. He has delivered lectures and led seminars internationally and has tutored Sociology Level 1 at the University of Glasgow. Additionally, he has collaborated as a research assistant on the British Academy-funded project LLAMIS, co-led by Dr. Francesca Stella and Prof. Rebecca Kay. Avsar is currently the acting Co-Principal Investigator on the British Council-funded project Performance Ecologies: Good Life and is involved with UNESCO RIELA on multilingual critical performative projects. His plays have been showcased in Scotland, Germany, and Italy, and he was the recipient of the Kevin Elyot Award in 2019 from the University of Bristol Theatre Collection.
