Biography

Erdem Karatekin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Cellular and Molecular Physiology at Yale University. He earned his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Louisville in 1994, followed by an M.Sc. in Chemistry from Columbia University in 1996 and a Ph.D. in 1999. His post-doctoral training included a position at the Curie Institute from 2000 to 2002, where he focused on soft matter physics and chemistry. Subsequently, he served as a visiting research scientist at Yale's School of Medicine from 2008 to 2011, before joining the faculty in 2012. His research interests encompass several facets of membrane biology, including the dynamics of neurotransmitter release, the mechanics of exocytosis and endocytosis, and the molecular underpinnings of protein localization in membranes. Karatekin has a strong emphasis on understanding the biophysics of cellular processes and has published numerous articles on topics like membrane fusion and synaptic transmission. His contributions to the field have been recognized by notable awards, including the Kavli Neuroscience Scholar Award and a long-term fellowship from the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO).
