Biography

Erdem Varol is an Assistant Professor at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, specifically in the Department of Computer Science & Engineering. His research primarily focuses on developing next-generation signal processing analysis tools for neuroscience data. He is also part of the VIDA center. Previously, he completed his postdoctoral research in the Department of Statistics at the Zuckerman Institute, Columbia University, under the mentorship of Liam Paninski. Varol holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in the Department of Electrical & Systems Engineering, where he studied under Christos Davatzikos. While at Penn, he also received a Master’s degree in Statistics from the Wharton School. In 2022, he was recognized as a recipient of the NIH/NIMH K99/R00 award. His research interests lie at the intersection of computer science, neuroscience, and genomics, with a particular emphasis on building causal models that explain neural network connectivity in both human and animal brains, alongside their genetic signatures. His work has applications in computational neuroscience, computer vision, network science, signal processing, optimal transport theory, and deep learning.
