Biography

Dr. Ergin Sezgin's research interests include quantum gravity, supergravity, superstring theories, and higher-dimensional extended objects, with an emphasis on supermembranes and infinite-dimensional symmetries. Professor Sezgin received his bachelor's degree in 1975 from Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey, and went on to earn a Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1980. In 1981, he utilized a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Texas at Austin and became a researcher at the Institute for Theoretical Physics in Santa Barbara. He held postdoctoral staff scientist positions at the International Center for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy, before joining the Texas A&M faculty in 1990. Dr. Sezgin collaborated with Nobel laureate Abdus Salam on supergravity theories in diverse dimensions. In particular, he obtained general couplings for extended supergravity in four dimensions and examined the six-dimensional Maxwell-Einstein supergravity theory, sometimes referred to as the Salam-Sezgin model. He also co-discovered the 11-dimensional supermembrane theory and identified new space-time algebras related to the existence of super-extended objects.
