Eric Allen received his B.S. from the University of Oregon and his Ph.D. from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego. He performed postdoctoral research at the University of California, Berkeley as an NSF Postdoctoral Fellow in Microbial Biology. In 2006, he joined the faculty of Biological Sciences and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego. His research focuses on metagenomics and the genetic potential, ecology, and evolution of environmental microbial populations. The laboratory works on understanding microbial phenomena, including metabolic activities, biosynthetic processes, and the interactions between microbes and their hosts. Current projects investigate marine microorganisms, their roles in biogeochemical cycling, and the biosynthesis of halogenated organic compounds by marine microbes. Allen collaborates with colleagues in areas such as microbial ecology and marine natural product chemistry, and has special interests in bioinformatics related to microbial genomes and metagenomes.
