Dr. Eric Burkhart

Biography

Eric Burkhart is a Teaching Professor in the Department of Ecosystem Science and Management at Penn State University. He has a deep academic background in Ethnobotany, holding a B.A. in Ethnobotany from Idaho State University, an M.S. in Horticulture from Penn State University, and a Ph.D. in Forest Resources from Penn State University. His scholarly interests are centered around agroforestry, specifically in the context of Appalachian forest ecosystems. Over the years, Burkhart has developed a highly collaborative interdisciplinary research program that focuses on wild plant management, conservation, and ethnobotany. His work includes managing graduate students who investigate various ecological and phytochemical aspects of forest plants, such as American ginseng and ghost pipe. Notably, his research has led to peer-reviewed publications on topics including plant genetics, forest biodiversity, and the sustainable use of non-timber forest products.
