Biography

Eric M. Darling is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, with joint appointments in the Departments of Medical Science, Engineering, and Orthopaedics at Brown University. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Harvey Mudd College and completed his Ph.D. in Bioengineering at Rice University, followed by postdoctoral training at Duke University. Dr. Darling's research focuses on understanding the relationship between biological functions of cells and the micro/nano-scale mechanical properties, particularly in relation to stem cells. His long-term objective is to utilize quantitative assessments of mechanical biological characteristics in heterogeneous cell populations to improve tissue regeneration and cell-based therapies. His research encompasses major topics in cell mechanics, stem cells, and regenerative medicine, with a primary focus on the mechanical properties of cells and tissues and their influence on behavior. He has developed innovative techniques to evaluate mechanical characteristics and is interested in stem cell enrichment for improving tissue regeneration. Furthermore, he leads projects on mechanobiology, including the study of cellular heterogeneity and practical methods for sorting adult stem cells.
