Biography

Eric Drott is a Professor in the Butler School of Music at the University of Texas at Austin and holds the title of Virginia L. Murchison Regents Professor in Fine Arts. He received his Ph.D. from Yale University in 2001 and has taught at several institutions prior to his current role. His research interests encompass contemporary music cultures, streaming music platforms, music protest, genre theory, digital music, and the political economy of music. His book, Music Elusive Revolution, published by the University of California Press in 2011, explores the political impact of music during the upheavals of 1968 in France, focusing on various music communities including jazz, rock, and contemporary genres. Recently, he co-authored the book Streaming Music, Streaming Capital, set to be published by Duke University Press in 2024. Drott has presented papers at national and international conferences including the Society for Music Theory and the American Musicological Society. His articles have been featured in prominent journals such as the Journal of the American Musicological Society and Cultural Politics. In 2020, he received the Dent Medal from the Royal Musical Association in recognition of his significant contributions to the field of music research.
