Eric Higgs studies how to intervene responsibly in ecosystems undergoing rapid change. His work is anchored in ecological restoration, and has expanded in recent years to include appropriate ways of intervening in hybrid novel ecosystems, and the implications of ecological novelty. He directs the interdisciplinary, field-based Mountain Legacy Project, which studies long-term landscape change in Canada’s mountains using repeat photography. Higgs has initiated a research collaboration with Victoria-based Christine Lintott Architects to examine means of bringing urban design and ecological restoration closer together. He is the author of over one hundred articles and book chapters, and has authored, co-authored, and edited four books. Higgs served as chair of the Society for Ecological Restoration from 2001 to 2003, and was the director of the School of Environmental Studies from 2002 to 2010. He teaches an introductory Environmental Studies course (200), courses on ecological restoration (341, 445), and a field course on Galiano Island (471; ER 412), and contributes to a variety of Environmental Studies courses.
