Biography

Eric Johnson is the Edward W. Cleary Professor of Law and a Heidi Hurd Faculty Scholar at the University of Illinois College of Law. His teaching and writing focus on criminal law, criminal procedure, and evidence, with current research exploring concepts of causation, risk, and substantive criminal law. Johnson's work has been published in various peer-reviewed and student-edited legal journals, including the Law and Philosophy, Boston University Law Review, Iowa Law Review, and the U.C. Davis Law Review. He received the Carroll P. Hurd Award for Excellence in Faculty Scholarship in 2014 and 2016. With over a decade of experience as a government attorney, he has served in roles such as assistant attorney general in the Alaska Attorney General's Office and as the chief assistant attorney general. Prior to his current position, he directed the prosecution clinic at the University of Wyoming College of Law. Johnson holds a JD from the University of Michigan and a BA from the University of Washington.
