Biography

The Joyce lab studies chromosomes that are functionally organized within folded three-dimensional space over time. The primary goal is to understand the structure and position of chromosomes within the nucleus, as established by inherited cell divisions. Dysfunctional organization contributes to genome instability. In pursuit of this goal, the lab develops and utilizes technologies to visualize chromosomes and subchromosomal regions at single-cell resolution in a high-throughput manner. The research takes advantage of both Drosophila and mammalian systems models to investigate chromosome function, allowing for a direct examination of conservation and health-related mechanisms. Current projects include studying the spatial organization of the epigenome, the regulatory logic underlying cohesin-mediated chromatin looping, high-throughput screening of novel pathways important for genome organization, and the impact of aging on three-dimensional chromosome arrangement.
