Eric Poisson is a full professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Guelph, where he has been since 1995. He obtained his B.Sc. in physics from Laval University in 1987, followed by an M.Sc. and PhD in theoretical physics from the University of Alberta in 1989 and 1991, respectively. His Ph.D. thesis, supervised by Werner Israel, focused on the internal structure of black holes. Poisson's research interests lie primarily in the fields of astrophysics, black holes, general relativity, gravitation, and neutron stars. His work on the discovery of gravitational waves resulting from merging black holes has significantly advanced the field, contributing to the recognition of this achievement with the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics. He is an Affiliate Member of the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics and has held notable positions such as President of the International Society on General Relativity and Gravitation from 2016 to 2019. His editorial experience includes roles with prestigious journals such as Physical Review Letters and Classical and Quantum Gravity. In recognition of his contributions to physics, he has received several awards, including the Herzberg Medal from the Canadian Association of Physicists and the President’s Distinguished Professor Award at the University of Guelph.
