Biography

Eric S.G. Shaqfeh is the Lester Levi Carter Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Chemical Engineering at Stanford University. He earned his B.S.E. summa cum laude from Princeton University in 1981, followed by an M.S. in 1982 and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Stanford University in 1986. His postdoctoral fellowship was at the University of Cambridge in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics. Shaqfeh has held numerous positions, including a member of the technical staff at AT&T Bell Laboratories, and has been a faculty member at Stanford since the early 1990s, gaining a dual appointment with the Mechanical Engineering department in 2001. His research focuses on non-Newtonian fluid mechanics, polymer statistical dynamics, and suspension mechanics. With over 200 publications, he has significantly contributed to fluid dynamics and rheology, serving as an Associate Editor for Physical Review Fluids since 2016. His accolades include the APS Francois N. Frenkiel Award, NSF Presidential Young Investigator Award, and Designation as a Fellow of the American Physical Society. Shaqfeh is also part of the National Academy of Engineering and has delivered esteemed lectures, including the Elmer Gaden Lecture at Columbia University in 2022.
