Biography

Eric Tang is an Associate Professor in the Department of African and African Diaspora Studies at The University of Texas at Austin, where he also serves as the Director of the Center for Asian American Studies and the Race, Indigeneity, Migration major. He holds a Ph.D. in American Studies from New York University. His research focuses on the intersections of politics, poetics, and urban unrest, particularly the experiences of Southeast Asian refugees in New York City since the 1980s. Tang explores the crucial role of refugee resettlement in disrupting urban phenomena, such as the Bronx arson epidemic, as well as the solidarities formed between Vietnamese American and African American communities in post-disaster New Orleans. His writings have been published in various academic and popular outlets, including American Quarterly and the Washington Post. Tang's recent book, 'Unsettled: Cambodian Refugees in NYC Hyperghetto,' chronicles the lives of Southeast Asian refugees. He has received recognition for his impactful scholarship, including the Constance Rourke Prize for his influential article in American Quarterly.
