Biography

Eric Zaslow received his PhD in Physics from Harvard University in 1995. He initially held a postdoctoral position in Mathematics at Harvard before joining the faculty of the Northwestern University Department of Mathematics in 1998. From 2018 to 2021, he served as the department chair. In 2022, Zaslow was appointed as the Henry Sanborn Noyes Chair of Mathematics. His research primarily addresses mathematical questions arising from duality symmetries in physics, with a strong focus on string theory and mirror symmetry. He has explored linkages between sheaf theory, symplectic topology, and cluster varieties. Zaslow has received several prestigious fellowships, including being named an Alfred P. Sloan fellow in 2000, a Clay Senior Scholar in 2004, and a Simons Fellow in 2012. In 2021, he was elected as a fellow of the American Mathematical Society. He has also held distinguished visiting positions at institutions such as the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn and the Pacific Institute for Mathematical Sciences at the University of British Columbia. Zaslow is actively involved in initiatives to promote broader participation in mathematics education, having helped create the Evanston Math Circle, the Weinberg College Bridge Program, and the Causeway Postbaccalaureate Certificate Program. His commitment to teaching excellence has been recognized with the Weinberg College Distinguished Teaching Award in 2001 and the Charles Deering McCormick Professorship of Teaching Excellence in 2012.
