Biography

Erica Cochran Hameen is an architectural designer and an Associate Professor at the Carnegie Mellon University School of Architecture. She serves as the Co-Director of the Center for Building Performance & Diagnostics and as the Track Chair for the Doctor of Design program. Hameen is actively involved in enhancing student relations and has been influential in developing new courses that focus on energy-efficient and healthy retrofits. She was previously the Program Director for the UDream program at Carnegie Mellon from 2009 to 2016, where she worked to increase diversity in the urban design profession, particularly by offering permanent employment opportunities for recent graduates in Pittsburgh. Hameen has extensive experience as a studio critic at multiple universities and has worked on a diverse range of projects including educational facilities, media, residential, and community spaces. She has received numerous awards for her research and contributions to architectural design, including recognitions from the AIA and other organizations. Hameen earned her Bachelor of Architecture from Virginia Tech, a Master of Science in Sustainable Design, and a Ph.D. in Building Performance & Diagnostics from Carnegie Mellon University. Her doctoral research investigated the impact of school building and neighborhood characteristics on the health and performance of students and teachers.
