Erica M Knavel Koepsel MD obtained her undergraduate degree from Northwestern University and her medical degree from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in 2007. She completed a preliminary year in General Surgery followed by a residency in Diagnostic Radiology and a fellowship in Vascular Interventional Radiology at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics. After completing her training, she became a senior associate consultant and was promoted to full consultant at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN. In 2021, Knavel Koepsel returned to the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics to join the Interventional Radiology section as an associate professor. She became the section chief of Interventional Radiology in 2024. Dr. Knavel Koepsel possesses special expertise in MRI-guided interventions, complex IVC filter retrieval, uterine artery embolization, and lymphangiography. Her professional interests include venous reconstruction and treatment of venous insufficiency. She has authored or co-authored numerous articles in radiology and interventional radiology and consistently presents at national and international meetings. Dr. Knavel Koepsel has received several awards, including the JVIR Distinguished Laboratory Investigation in 2018 and the Mayo Clinic Teacher of the Year for the Interventional Radiology section in 2019. Outside of work, she practices yoga, enjoys traveling and hiking, and values spending time with family. She is a strong advocate for green initiatives, equitable care, and diversity and inclusion.
