Biography

Erich Bryner is a retired professor of Reformed theology with a long career in both academic and pastoral settings. He studied Protestant theology in Zurich and Tübingen between 1961 and 1966, followed by various roles in church ministry. In 1972, he earned his doctorate, and from 1972 to 1979, he served as a scientific assistant at the Chair of History and Theology of Eastern Christianity at the University of Erlangen. After habilitation in 1978, he worked as a pastor while simultaneously engaging in research as a private lecturer in Eastern Church History at the University of Zurich. In 1989, Bryner became an adjunct professor and later directed the Institute of Faith of the Second World until 2005. Even after retirement, he has continued his scientific work and teaching in the Theological Faculty of the University of Zurich. His research focuses on the history and current situation of Orthodox Churches in Eastern Europe, particularly in Russia, as well as the impact of the Zurich Reformation on the region and the study of Reformation history in Schaffhausen.
