Erich P. Ippen received his SB degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1962 and his PhD from the University of California in 1968. He worked at Bell Laboratories in Holmdel, NJ from 1968 to 1980 before joining the faculty of MIT, where he is now Professor Emeritus of Physics and the Elihu Thomson Professor of Electrical Engineering Emeritus. He is known for his early work on nonlinear optics in fibers and is a pioneer in the fields of femtosecond science and technology. Ippen’s current research involves femtosecond fiber integrated photonic devices, nanophotonics, and ultrafast studies of materials and devices, as well as femtosecond optical clock arbitrary waveform technologies. Over the years, he has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to optics and photonics, including the Frederic Ives Medal and the Charles Hard Townes Award from the Optical Society of America. Ippen has actively contributed to the optics community and is recognized for laying foundational work in ultrafast science engineering, providing sustained leadership and inspiring others in the field.
