Biography

Erik-Jan Broers studied legal science at Katholieke Hogeschool Tilburg, the precursor to the present Tilburg University, and completed his studies in 1986. He became a member of the department of Legal History and has been a researcher and lecturer ever since. Broers defended his thesis titled 'Beledigingszaken voor de Staatse Raad van Brabant 1586-1795' in 1996. Currently, he teaches courses on European Legal History at the bachelor’s level and on the History of Criminal Law and the History of Tax Law at the master’s level. Over the years, he has published several books, including 'History of Criminal Law' and 'Criminal Procedural Law', along with 'Rabauwen, vagebonden en lediggangers. Criminele voorouders berecht en bestraft' (2017) and 'Aanklagen onder de rivieren' (2018). Broers has also contributed chapters to international volumes in the field of criminality and justice, writing essays on topics related to the historical evolution of (criminal) law in the Netherlands.
