Professor Dr. Erik Bakkers

Biography

Erik Bakkers founded his own research group in 2017 at Eindhoven University of Technology, focusing on innovative applications of nanowires. His group has made significant advancements in areas such as Majorana particles and the manipulation of quantum properties at the nanoscale, opening new research fields for quantum information and quantum computing. They have recently discovered Majorana fermions within nanowires, which presents groundbreaking opportunities. Additionally, Bakkers' research explores the light emission properties of silicon, with aims to revolutionize fiber-optic data transmission through modifications in its crystalline structure. His group is also engaged in developing flexible, high-efficiency solar cells using transparent, flexible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymers embedding III/V semiconductor nanowires. His academic journey began with a PhD in nanoelectrochemistry from the University of Utrecht, leading to a pivotal role at Philips Research Eindhoven in 2000 where he initiated research in nanotechnology. In 2010, his growing interest in fundamental research led him to join the Technical University of Eindhoven as a part-time professor in the Quantum Transport group.
