Biography

Erik Burman holds the Goldsmid Chair in Applied Mathematics Mechanics at University College London (UCL) since 2025 and has been serving as the Chair of Computational Mathematics at UCL since 2013. Prior to his current appointment, he was a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Sussex from 2007 to 2013. He also held positions as a Senior Researcher at the École Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne in Switzerland from 2002 to 2007 and as a Research Assistant in two different chairs at the same institution. His career began at the Centre de Mathématiques Appliquées (CMAP) at École Polytechnique in France, where he worked from 1998 to 2000. Burman earned his PhD in 1998 from Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden, with a thesis focused on adaptive methods for compressible two-phase flows. His academic expertise predominantly lies in computational mathematics, with an emphasis on applied mathematics and mechanics.
