Biography

Erik Dent is a Professor and Vice Chair in the Department of Neuroscience at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. His research focuses on the mechanisms underlying central nervous system development and plasticity at the cellular and molecular levels. He examines the structure and function of the nervous system, especially in relation to the cytoskeleton, which consists of polymer systems such as actin filaments, microtubules, and neurofilaments. His lab investigates both early and late events in the life cycle of neurons, including neuronal migration, neurite outgrowth, synaptic plasticity, and the dynamics of dendritic spines. Dent’s work emphasizes the role of F-BAR proteins in actin cytoskeleton dynamics and their influence on neuronal development, as well as how microtubules can impact synaptic plasticity in mature dendrites. His laboratory employs molecular and biochemical methods complemented by high-resolution live cell microscopy to study these processes.
