Dr. Erik Elmroth

Biography

Erik Elmroth is a Professor in the Department of Computing Science at Umeå University, where he possesses extensive leadership experience, including roles such as Department Head and Deputy Director of the national supercomputer center (HPC2N). Under his leadership from 2009 to 2012, he transformed the department from being primarily education-focused to a strong research entity. Elmroth has been instrumental in initiatives that have doubled the department's size and enhanced its international competitiveness. His research focuses on distributed systems with an emphasis on the theories and algorithms governing autonomous management of ICT resources across scales ranging from individual servers to large cloud datacenters. Elmroth has supervised 40 PhD students, with 20 serving as their main advisor. Additionally, he has been active in major research leadership roles, coordinating Umeå University's efforts in several high-profile research programs with significant funding. He is a member of the Executive Committee for the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program and has received numerous accolades, including the Nordea Scientific Award in 2011 and being a co-winner of the SIAM Linear Algebra Prize in 2000. His international experience includes work at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Furthermore, Elmroth co-founded Elastisys AB, known for its focus on security and compliance in software development.
