Erik Hitters is an Associate Professor in the Department of Media and Communication at Erasmus University Rotterdam, where he co-founded and is the managing director of the Erasmus Research Centre for Media, Communication and Culture (ERMeCC). His research interests encompass transformations in media and cultural industries, focusing on the changing logics and institutional dynamics within sectors such as film, music, and broadcasting. He also studies local, regional, and national creative industries policies, including the effects of media clustering in creative cities. Erik leads large research projects, including the NWO funded Creative Industries Strategic Research Project 'Cultures of Innovation in Creative Industries' and the Smart Culture Strategic Research Project 'Staging Popular Music: Sustainable Live Music Ecologies for Artists, Music Venues, and Cities (POPLIVE)', with joint funding from NWO SIA. He is a trained sociologist from Tilburg University and received his doctorate in Social Sciences from Utrecht University in 1996. In 1997, he served as a Senior Fellow at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, USA. Before his current position, he worked as a lecturer and assistant professor at universities in Nijmegen and Tilburg, and was a senior researcher in the Department of Arts and Culture Studies at Erasmus University. He has also served as the Chair of the Examination Board and as the Director of Education ad interim at the Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication.
