Biography

Erik Hove is an alto saxophonist who plays a wide variety of jazz, improvised, and contemporary music. He was born in Vancouver and has lived in Montreal and New York. At McGill University, he studied under Greg Osby. In New York, he formed a turntable-jazz group called Soundclash and won the François Marcaurelle Prize at a Montreal festival. He has released a disc on Effendi Records and leads various trios and quartets. His latest project, the Erik Hove Chamber Ensemble, is a musical hybrid that combines jazz, contemporary classical, and electro-acoustic music. The ensemble consists of a jazz rhythm section and a small contemporary chamber ensemble, blending group and solo improvisation with rigorous conceptual contemporary writing. The group's debut album, 'Saturated Colour,' received rave reviews from local and international press, and its follow-up, 'Polygon,' was released by Inner Circle Records to equal critical acclaim. Hove has played locally and internationally with several artists, including the Juno-winning Christine Jensen Jazz Orchestra and Anna Webber's Montreal People.
