Biography

Erik Johnson is a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Southern California. He earned his Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Doctoral degrees in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1988, 1993, and 1997, respectively. He also holds a Certificate in Biblical Studies from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, obtained in 1991. Dr. Johnson joined the Civil Engineering faculty at USC in August 1999 after serving as a visiting research assistant professor at the University of Notre Dame from 1997 to 1999. He has held various leadership roles, including Associate Chair of the Sonny Astani Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering from 2007 to 2017 and Vice Dean of Academic Programs at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering since 2017. He is a recipient of several prestigious awards, including the National Science Foundation's CAREER Award in 2001 and the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Illinois in 2016. His research interests include smart structures, control of structural vibrations, structural health monitoring, and computationally-efficient simulations in dynamical systems.
