Erik Lebret obtained his doctorate at Wageningen Agricultural College with a thesis focused on air pollution in Dutch homes in 1985. After his PhD, he worked as a visiting research associate at Harvard School of Public Health, supported by a grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research. Upon returning to the Netherlands, he began his work at the RIVM, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment, where he conducted research on the health effects of air pollution and smog episodes. He was actively involved in creating the report 'Zorgen voor Morgen' (Concerns for Tomorrow) in 1988 and contributed to the subsequent Environmental Outlooks (Milieuverkenning en –balansen) and the European equivalent 'Concern Europe' in 1994. Lebret initiated the Health Impact Assessment of Schiphol Airport for various ministries and served as a member of the steering committee for health monitoring of victims of the Firework Disaster in Enschede. Currently, he holds the position of Chief Science Officer for Integrated Risk Assessment at RIVM, with primary research interests in environmental epidemiology, development and synthesis of environmental health knowledge, and advising policy makers on managing uncertain risks.
