Biography

Erik Wibbels is a Presidential Penn Compact Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania. He serves as the Co-Director of the Penn Development Research Initiative and DevLab. His current major research projects focus on the human impact of deportations on Central Americans, the effects of refugees on social cohesion in Kenya and South Sudan, and the application of Machine Learning in peace studies. He is also involved in initiatives that assess the social and political responses to climate change worldwide using Natural Language Processing. Wibbels actively collaborates with governments, international donors, and implementing partners to enhance the design, evaluation, and impact of development programming. Through his role at PDRI/DevLab@Penn, he is committed to educational initiatives, providing support and opportunities for Pre-Post-Doctoral Fellows, Ph.D. candidates, MA and undergraduate students through a combination of applied research, internships, and coursework.
