Biography

Erika Alm is an Associate Professor of Gender Studies and currently serves as the Associate Dean for Education at the Faculty of Humanities, University of Gothenburg. She earned her Ph.D. in History of Ideas in 2006, focusing on the discourses surrounding sex, gender, and desire, and their implications on legislation regarding gender reassignment and abortion in Sweden during the 1960s and 1970s. Her postdoctoral research at Umeå Centre for Gender Studies examined contemporary discourses on atypical sex development aligning with intersex activism. Alm's research interests explore the ethical implications and social ramifications of medical management of intersex individuals, informed by feminist theory and queer theory. Her recent projects include researching transgender activism in Pakistan and the U.S. and their cultural implications. Alm has extensive teaching experience across interdisciplinary courses and has supervised more than 70 students at the undergraduate and graduate levels. She has contributed significantly to academic discussions around trans rights and gender norms in Sweden and has published in various academic journals and books, fostering discourse on critical perspectives of cisnormativity.
