Biography

Erin M. Barbato is the Director of the Immigrant Justice Clinic at the University of Wisconsin Law School, where she teaches students to represent individuals in removal proceedings for humanitarian-based immigration relief. Her core work focuses on representing people seeking refuge in the United States, particularly unaccompanied minors. Prior to her law career, Erin volunteered as a teacher at El Centro del Muchacho Trabajador, a non-profit organization in Quito, Ecuador, assisting families resettled in poverty. Her dedication to representing immigrants has been recognized by the Wisconsin Law Journal, which named her a Coming Lawyer in 2010 and awarded her the Woman Lawyer of 2014. Erin has also received the Lee Lynn Copen Family Justice Award in 2013 for her work with immigrant victims of domestic violence and sexual assault and was honored with the Clinical Teacher of the Year Award by her students in 2021. She is an active member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association and engages in research on transnational immigration and human rights clinics throughout the Americas.
